Reflection: My First WordPress Contribution

My First WordPress Contribution through Photos, Polyglots, and Training Teams

My First Steps as a WordPress Contributor

Joining the WordPress Credits Program gave me the opportunity to move beyond learning about open source and start contributing to a global community.

As a Computer Science and Engineering student interested in technology, web development, and open-source projects, I was excited to explore how WordPress contributors work together and how I could make a meaningful contribution.

Getting Started with the Contribution Guidelines

When I first explored the WordPress contribution handbooks and guidelines, I realized that contributing involves more than simply submitting work. Each team follows specific processes to maintain quality and support collaboration.

The Photos Team guidelines helped me understand image quality, licensing, and the importance of clear descriptions. I also explored the Polyglots and Training Teams to learn how Bengali translations are contributed, reviewed, and improved.

At first, understanding the different workflows was a little challenging. However, the course lessons, documentation, and my mentor’s guidance helped me become more familiar with the process.

My First Contribution Experience

One of my earliest hands-on experiences was contributing original photographs to the WordPress Photo Directory.

Initially, I needed to understand the submission requirements and how to prepare photographs properly. As I continued contributing, I became more confident and comfortable with the process.

I have now published more than 30 CC0-licensed photographs, featuring nature, landscapes, plants, and everyday environments in Bangladesh. These photographs are freely available for others to use.

Alongside photography, I have contributed Bengali translations through the Polyglots Team to help make WordPress more accessible to Bengali-speaking users.

As part of my work with the Training Team, I prepared a Bengali translation of the Learn WordPress lesson “The WordPress Ecosystem” and submitted it for review through GitHub Issue #3724. The translation is currently awaiting review and feedback.

These experiences helped me understand different types of open-source contributions and motivated me to continue learning.

Learning About Community Collaboration

One thing I appreciate about WordPress is its open and supportive community.

Through GitHub and Make WordPress discussions, I have learned how contributors share progress, exchange ideas, ask questions, and provide feedback.

My mentor’s guidance has also helped me understand the contribution workflows and overcome challenges along the way.

I have realized that open-source contribution is not only about completing tasks. It also involves communication, patience, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

What I Learned and What’s Next

My early contributions have helped me become more confident in navigating WordPress contribution workflows and participating in the open-source community.

I have gained practical experience in photography contributions, Bengali localization, educational content translation, and community collaboration.

Moving forward, I plan to continue contributing photographs, improve my Bengali translation skills, and gain more experience with the Training Team’s content localization and review process.

I am grateful for my mentor’s guidance and the opportunity to learn from the WordPress community.

This journey has encouraged me to keep learning, collaborate with other contributors, and remain involved in the WordPress community beyond the WP Credits Program.
